Serial EDAS FAQ

1. How many users can communicate with an EDAS unit at the same time?
2. Can the EDAS run programs locally?
3. What is the maximum data transfer rate of serial data when                           communicating with an EDAS COM port?
4. Does the EDAS support dynamic IP addressing using DHCP?
5. Does the EDAS support SNMP?

1. How many users can can communicate with an EDAS unit at the same time?

Up to 8 clients can talk to a single EDAS unit, but the ports these clients read or write data to or from must be configured the same way. That is, a port cannot be an input and an output at the same time. (Provisions to lock-out other users from attempting to alter the EDAS unit’s configuration are provided through software support.)

2. Can the EDAS run programs locally?

No. The EDAS must be configured and controlled by application software running on a host computer.

3. What is the maximum data transfer rate of serial data when communicating with an EDAS COM port?

EDAS COM ports support baud rates from 300 to 115,200 bits per second. The maximum continuous throughput (streaming of data through the serial port) supported by the unit is 31,000 bits per second (31k baud). EDAS COM ports can acquire data at baud rates higher than 31k baud when data is acquired in samples of limited size. Otherwise, over-runs may occur.

Regarding EDAS units with multiple COM ports, note that the maximum continuous throughput of any one of an EDAS unit’s COM ports will be 31k baud divided by the number of active ports (assuming all ports in continuous use, at the same baud rate). For example, on a unit where all four COM ports are active and in continuous use, the maximum continuous throughput for each port is 7750 bits per second. (This test was performed on an isolated Ethernet with no other network traffic. When the same test was done with the unit connected to Intelligent Instrumentation’s company network, throughput was typically reduced by 3-5%.)

4. Does the EDAS support dynamic IP addressing using DHCP?

No, current versions of EDAS do not support use of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. IP addressing must be configured through the EDAS unit's RS-232 COM port using configuration software (SYSCHECK) provided with the unit.  [See EDAS ce...]

5. Does the EDAS support SNMP?

No, versions of EDAS 1000 Series do not support the Simple Network Management Protocol. [See EDAS ce...]
